I would like to know who came up with the brilliant idea of hiking from one side of the Grand Canyon to the other and back in less than 24 hours! Who ever it was deserves an award for the most craziest extreme hike ever. John and a few other guys decided that it would be a lot of fun to see if they could meet this challenge. They departed from the South Rim at 2:37 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2008. It is a 24 mile hike from the South Rim to the North Rim and from the top of the South Rim to the rivers bottom it is a vertical mile deep. It took John about 8 1/2 hours to hike from the South Rim to the North Rim where he stopped for lunch before heading back across the canyon...A hike that would take most rational hikers 3 days to complete. After lunch they headed back to the South Rim. He finally made it back to the South Rim at 10:20 pm, 19 hours and 40 minutes after beginning and 48 miles later!
I drove up with a friend and our kids to see our guys finish! It was quite an experience trying to keep 5 kids 4 and younger happy in a very long car ride...it was a whole other experience trying to keep these same kids off the sides of the canyon! We were very excited to see each hiker climb out of the canyon...some finished in 15 1/2 hours! And we were very relieved to have our husbands stumble out and finish!
